Strikeforce Hendo vs Feijao & Coenen vs Tate On March 5, 2011; Who Is The Only Fighter To Compete For Titles In STRIKEFORCE, UFC & Pride FC?

RAFAEL "FEIJAO'' CAVALCANTE DEFENDS LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE AGAINST SUPERSTAR DAN HENDERSON AT STRIKEFORCE IN COLUMBUS, OHIO, SATURDAY, MARCH 5, LIVE ON SHOWTIME.

Henderson secured the title shot in devastating fashion, destroying Brazilian Renato "Babalu" Sobral by 1:53, first-round knockout (punches) last Dec. 4 in St. Louis. It was the STRIKEFORCE 205-pound debut for Henderson, a former two-division PRIDE Fighting Championships belt-holder who will become the only fighter to compete for titles in STRIKEFORCE, PRIDE and UFC.

Unbeaten Billy Evangelista Meets Jorge Masvidal

Event to be Held in Conjunction With Arnold Sports Festival

NEW YORK (Jan. 31, 2011) - Dan Henderson is one of the most recognizable and popular fighters in the world. He is the only fighter in the history of Mixed Martial Arts to simultaneously hold two world titles in two different weight classes with a major MMA promotion.

In an illustrious career, the legendary 40-year-old Henderson has won a total of four MMA world championships and fought and defeated a host of all-time greats, including Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort. Before turning pro, Henderson was a two-time United States Olympic Games wrestler. There isn't a lot that he hasn't accomplished.

On Saturday, March 5, Henderson (26-8), of Temecula, Calif., will attempt to add another belt to his wardrobe when he challenges defending champion Rafael "Feijao'' Cavalcante (10-2) of Brazil for the STRIKEFORCE World Light Heavyweight (205 pounds) Championship at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

In the opening half of a STRIKEFORCE World Championship doubleheader, Marloes "Rumina'' Coenen (18-4) of the Netherlands will risk her lightweight title for a first time against No. 1 135-pound contender, Miesha "Takedown'' Tate (11-2), of Tacoma, Wash.

American military hero Tim Kennedy (12-3) of Fort Bragg, N.C., will be opposed by Luke Rockhold (7-1) at middleweight (185 pounds) and undefeated Billy Evangelista (11-0) of Fresno, Calif., will take on Jorge Masvidal (20-6) of Miami, Fla., at lightweight (155 pounds) in other televised bouts on SHOWTIME.

The event, STRIKEFORCE's first in the state of Ohio, will take place in conjunction with The Arnold Sports Festival, the nation's largest health and fitness exposition founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

A special ticket pre-sale for "STRIKEFORCE Insiders," begins tomorrow/Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m. CT and ends Thursday at 10 p.m.  Fans can sign up to become an "Insider" at STRIKEFORCE.com

Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday, Feb. 4 at the Nationwide Arena ticket office, online at Ticketmaster.co <http://www.strikeforce.com/insider.html> m and Strikeforce.com and Ticketmaster by phone at (800) 745-3000.

It will be the hard-hitting 6-foot-1 Henderson's third start for STRIKEFORCE since he left the UFC on a three-fight winning streak to sign with the San Jose, Calif.-based promotion in December 2009.

For Cavalcante, a powerful 6-foot, 30-year-old Brazilian referred  to simply as "Feijao," it will be his first defense of the 205-pound crown he captured with a third-round upset TKO  (elbows) over previously undefeated "King Mo'' Lawal last Aug. 21 in Houston.

The talented Feijao will enter the scheduled five-round match at the peak of his game. He has won three in a row and six out of his last seven.  Feijao has never gone the distance as a pro and the furthest one of his bouts has gone came against King Mo.

Feijao has never been in with anybody who hits like Henderson, but the Brazilian fighter has been highly-touted as one of the next great superstars of the sport.  With his fearsome submission capabilities and vastly improved kicking and punching, Feijao could indeed be something special -- especially if he passes the class test against Hendo.

"Everybody knows about Dan Henderson and what he can do and how hard he hits,'' said Feijao, a native of Ilha Solteira in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who trains out of the famed Black House camp with, among others, the aforementioned Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida and Antonio Nogueira.

"This is going to be a very exciting fight. I worked very hard to get back to where I could fight for the title. Now that I have won it, I've been working even harder to keep it.''

STRIKEFORCE, at 185 pounds, the aggressive-minded veteran nearly knocked out Jake Shields during a dominant first round on April 17, 2010, in Nashville, before losing a close decision.

"I want to thank STRIKEFORCE for this opportunity to fight for the title,'' said Henderson, a winner in four of his last five. "That last fight got me back on track. I'll be ready for anything, but mostly I'm expecting a flat-our war.''

Coenen, a product of Holland's Golden Glory team, captured the STRIKEFORCE crown with an impressive third-round submission (armbar) over defending belt-holder Sarah Kaufman on Oct. 9, 2010. A strikingly attractive submission whiz, the talented, 5-foot-9, 29-year-old ousted Kaufman one fight after giving STRIKEFORCE 145-pound champ, the naturally bigger Cris Cyborg one of her toughest fights.

Tate, a winner of five in a row and 10 out of 11, earned her first five-round fight by winning twice during a single-night elimination tournament on STRIKEFORCE Challengers on Aug. 13, 2010, in Phoenix, Ariz., The 5-foot-6, 24-year-old outpointed Maiju Kujala and then Hitomi Akano to take the tourney and ascend to the top spot. It will be Tate's fifth bout on SHOWTIME and her sixth start for STRIKEFORCE.

Kennedy is an American military hero who's toured the Middle East multiple times, and earned the Army's Bronze Medal Star medal for valor under fire. This will be the 5-foot-11, 31-year olds fifth start for STRIKEFORCE and his first since losing a close, hard-fought decision to "Jacare" Souza in a fight for the then-vacant STRIKEFORCE middleweight title last Aug. 21 on SHOWTIME. The disputed defeat ended a four-fight winning streak for Kennedy, who has split two fights against Jason "Mayhem'' Miller.

The up-and-coming Rockhold is taking a step up in class, but the 6-foot-3, 26-year-old has won six in a row, all in the first round, including three straight on STRIKEFORCE Challengers.  In his last start, he registered a 2:24 TKO over Paul Bradley on Feb. 26, 2010. A rising star in STRIKEFORCE'S talent-laden 185-pound division, Rockhold was scheduled to fight last Oct. 9, but withdrew after injuring a shoulder in training.

Like Tate and Rockhold, Evangelista is a veteran of the STRIKEFORCE Challengers series who is making his Saturday debut for STRIKEFORCE on SHOWTIME. In his last outing and first fight in nearly a year, the 5-foot-8, 29-year-old May Thai specialist won a unanimous decision over hard-trying Walachia Spiritwolf in an extremely spirited affair last Oct. 22. That fight was contested at a catch weight of 165 pounds; Evangelista will be competing at his natural weight of 155 for this one.

Masvidal is an experienced seven-year pro who has been matched with some good ones across his career. In his last outing, he went the distance with world-ranked Paul "Semtex" Daley before losing a decision on Sept. 10, 2010. The 5-foot-10, 26-year-old member of America Top Team is unbeaten in his two fights for STRIKEFORCE.

About STRIKEFORCE

STRIKEFORCE (www.strikeforce.com <http://www.strikeforce.com/> ) is a world-class mixed martial arts cage fight promotion which, on Friday, March 10, 2006, made history with its "Shamrock vs. Gracie" event, the first sanctioned mixed martial arts fight card in California state history.  The star-studded extravaganza, which pitted legendary champion Frank Shamrock against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Cesar Gracie at San Jose's HP Pavilion, played host to a sold-out, record crowd of 18,265.  Since 1995, STRIKEFORCE, sanctioned by ISKA, has been the exclusive provider of martial arts programming for ESPN and, after 12 years of success as a leading, world championship kickboxing promotion, the company unveiled its mixed martial arts (MMA) series with "Shamrock vs. Gracie."  In May 2008, West Coast Productions, the parent company of STRIKEFORCE, partnered with Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment (SVS&E), an entity created in 2000 to oversee all business operation aspects of the San Jose Sharks and HP Pavilion at San Jose.  In March 2009, STRIKEFORCE signed a multi-year agreement with SHOWTIME® to stage live events on the premium cable television network.  The promotion has since also produced two live, primetime events on the CBS Television Network.

"Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" salaries: Nick Diaz leads $463,500 fighter payroll

Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz ($150,000) and fellow defending champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza ($85,000) were the top earners at this past weekend's "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" event.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today requested and received the list of salaries from the California State Athletic Commission.

The event took place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., and aired on Showtime. The total disclosed payroll for the event was $463,500.

Diaz defeated Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos ($20,000) in the night's headliner, and middleweight champ Souza stopped Lawler  ($65,000) in the co-headliner.

Perhaps the most notable figure was the salary attached to former NFL great Herschel Walker. Despite his heavy promotion of the card and the interest he drew for his second pro fight, he earned a flat rate of $5,000. However, additional compensation likely came in other forms for the 48-year-old fighter.

The full payouts include:

Champ Nick Diaz: $150,000 (no win bonus)
def. Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos: $20,000

Champ Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza: $85,000 ($15,000 win bonus)

def. Lucas Gamaza: $1,500

Jenna Castillo: $3,000 ($1,500 win bonus)
def. Charlene Gellner: $1,000

Now, the usual disclaimer: The figures do not include deductions for items such as insurance, licenses and taxes. Additionally, the figures do not include money paid by sponsors, which can oftentimes be a substantial portion of a fighter's income.

The figures also do not include the results from the night's three amateur bouts. (Amateur fighters are not compensated.)

In other words, these are simply base salaries reported to the commission and do not represent the total amounts earned by each fighter.

Sportfight welterweight champion Nathan Coy will lock horns with American Kickboxing Academy representative Nate Moore in a preliminary matchup at Strikeforce “Diaz vs. Cyborg” on Saturday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. Sherdog.com will stream six undercard bouts live, beginning at 8:15 p.m. ET.

Anchored at Team Quest, Coy last appeared in May, when he dropped a split decision to top welterweight prospect Tyron Woodley in the Strikeforce Challengers 8 co-main event. A collegiate All-American wrestler at Oregon State University, he has secured six of his eight career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Wins over International Fight League alum Chris Albandia and UFC veterans Mike Pierce and Rick Story highlight Coy’s resume. In 11 professional appearances, he has been finished only once.

Moore has not fought since he was victimized by Tarec Saffiedine in a second-round knockout at Strikeforce Challengers 8. A potent finisher, he has recorded all six of his victories by KO, TKO or submission, five of them inside one round. Moore, who cut his teeth inside the Gladiator Challenge and United Fight League promotions has never lost back-to-back bouts.

Meanwhile, Skrap Pack standout Bobby Stack will square off with K-1 Hero’s veteran Isaiah Hill in an undercard lightweight duel.

Stack will carry a five-fight winning streak into the match. The San Francisco-based 27-year-old last competed at Strikeforce/M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Werdum” in June, when he earned a split decision victory over Derrick Burnsed. The victory improved his mark to 3-1 inside Strikeforce. Each of Stack’s past five bouts has reached the judges.

Winless in his past six outings, Hill has not fought since submitting to an Alexander Trevino keylock at Strikeforce “Carano vs. Cyborg” more than a year ago. A protégé of former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le, his last taste of victory came in a split decision over Casey Olson under the Warrior Cup banner in April 2007. Hill owns a 0-2 mark inside Strikeforce.

"Fighting Fedor" TV Show: What Would Happen If This Went On Today?

Fighting Fedor TV Show: What Would Happen Today If Sixteen Fighters Would Challenge Fedor Emelianenko At The Red Devil Sports Academy In Russia?  Assume there were no negotiation disputes or Zuffa exclusivity clauses.  Whom would you pick to fight Fedor?  What would the results be in your opinion?  Part of this question will be revealed at the Strikeforce & M-1 Global Grand Prix Tournament in February.

We highly recommend his book which he signed for us.

‘Fighting Fedor’ Reality Show in Works

Thursday, October 16, 2008
Joe Hall
‘Fighting Fedor’ Reality Show in Works NEW YORK -- Affliction has partnered with M-1 Global, which is shopping around a reality TV series called “Fighting Fedor” that will feature a 16-man tournament with the winner eventually getting a shot at Fedor Emelianenko on an Affliction card.

The partnership was officially announced Thursday at Trump Tower, along with some details on the show.

A promo video presented by M-1 Global explained that participants from various countries will travel to St. Petersburg, Russia, where they’ll train at the Red Devil camp and compete in the tournament. The video said the show will be on “American TV,” though it doesn’t have a home yet.

“We’re currently having negotiations with many different networks and channels,” said M-1 Global President Vadim Finkelchtein through an interpreter.

Finkelchtein said networks are particularly interested because the show will focus on heavyweights. He also noted the international scope of M-1 Global, which through the M-1 Challenge has hosted events this year in Spain, Holland, England, Korea and Japan.

“There are many international fighters that the United States doesn’t know about,” Finkelchtein said. “Fighters from countries such as Bulgaria, Finland. Fighters that have very interesting and wonderful styles and are very exciting. We’re now opening the doors to breed the next generation of MMA fighters.”

M-1 Global and Affliction declined to set a timeline for when the show could begin production or air. However, Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio did say that Fedor would continue competing in the meantime, with his next match taking place in the “first quarter of 2009.” Atencio added that Affliction has extended its contract with the top-ranked heavyweight.

Donald Trump, who is also aligned with Affliction, mentioned the success of his reality show, “The Apprentice,” before assessing the potential of the Fedor show.

“I really believe, in its own way, this will be a great success,” he said.

Trump will travel to St. Petersburg at some point, though he won’t play a significant role. Although he was confident the show would succeed, he jokingly questioned the judgment of the 16 participants.

“I don’t know who these folks are that are trying to qualify to get a fight with Fedor,” he said. “I wouldn’t particularly like to do that. I can think of a lot of other things I’d rather be doing.”

Evangelista Cyborg vs. Nick Diaz For The Welterweight Strikeforce Title On Jan 29. Will It Be Chute Boxe Thai Boxing vs. Boxing War?

Evangelista Cyborg who trains at Chute Boxe in Brazil & Arena MMA in San Diego is training for his welterweight title fight with Nick Diaz (Gracie Jiu Jitsu) this Saturday night. Your predictions? How interested are you in this fight with a 10 rating being absolutely interested?  If Evangelista, wins, him and his wife Cris "Cyborg" Santos would be the first spouses to hold championship belts in mixed martial arts.

Would it be a striking battle of Muay Thai Kickboxing Chute Boxe style vs Boxing with an intense ground battle? Diaz did not use many leg strikes during his rematch with KJ Noons but had successful boxing strikes.  Noons also trained at Arena MMA for his rematch so a win would give the staff at Arena MMA some great joy.

After years of fighting Vale Tudo and taking on Chute Boxe legends Jose “Pele” Landi-jons and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Santos expanded his fighting territory to include Japan and the UK in addition to taking fights in Brazil.

Veteran Evangelista”Cyborg” will take on the toughest challenge of his career as he faces Nick Diaz for the Strikeforce welterweight title, Jan 29, live on SHOWTIME!

UFC Fight For The Troops 2's Rani Yahya Also Trains At Arena MMA.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Champ Vinny Magalhaes Signs Six-Fight Deal With M-1 Global

Vinny Magalhaes Inks Six-fight Deal with M-1 Global

With his impressive submission victory over Alihan Magomedov in his first outing with M-1 Global this past December, Brazilian jiu jitsu ace, Vinny Magalhaes, has officially signed a six-fight contract with the European mixed martial arts promotion; details on the slick submission specialists first trip into the ring under the new 2-year deal will be announced shortly.

See http://www.m-1global.com/2010/12/13/video-vinny-magalhaes-vs-alihan-magomedov/

“M-1 Global is looking to expand its roster with fighters who are at the top of their game and Vinny is by far one of the best submission experts on the planet. The skills he possesses are unparalleled,” says Evgeni Kogan, Director of Operations for M-1 Global. “With the growth that M-1 Global is going through, extending a long-term contract to Magalhaes is the right thing to do for us a promotion. We have expectations that Vinny will become one of the greatest fighters in the world and are proud to have him on board.”

The three time BJJ world champion was quick to discuss his excitement on the signing as well. “I’m excited to get into the ring as soon as possible. Thank you to M-1 Global for providing me this great opportunity.”

Magalhaes’ manager, Juan Sanchez, was also eager to discuss the new contract. “During the entire contract negotiations M-1 has been extremely patient and easy to deal with. I want to fist thank M-1 Global’s Evgeni Kogan and Vadim Finkelchtein for giving Vinny the opportunity to showcase his skills inside the M-1 ring. M-1 has the reputation for finding and showcasing fighters with great skills and today’s signing proves that point. We are very excited and look forward to what the future brings with M-1 Global.

Magalhaes has also been instrumental in educating some of Europe’s top prospects and M-1Global’s upcoming stable of young fighters by leading a training seminar in Saint Petersburg, Russia late last year. Talking about his experience, ‘Pezao’ was quick to point out the determination his pupils possessed. “I’ve trained in Japan, Brazil, the United States and now Russia, one thing that I can say is that the Russian fighters were some of the most intense guys that I have ever been around. It’s clear they don’t have the same resources we have in the U.S.A. but that doesn’t change how tough they can be. Some of those guys were literally training 8 hours a day.”

Announcements on Magalhaes’ first bout under his new contract will be released shortly.
2011’s full slate of M-1 Challenge events held in the United States and Europe are primed to be mega-event spectaculars where Champions defend their titles and contenders jockey for position for a coveted shot at the gold.

MMA Fans Are Complaining About the Judging at UFC's Fight For the Troops 2

MMA Fans Are Complaining About the Judging at UFC's Fight For the Troops 2.  Which fight results do you disagree with the most?  Which fight was the best?  We would say Melvin Guillard then Wiman's wins were most exciting to fans watching with us.

Why did the ref not help George Roop after his TKO stoppage with Roop almost crashing down to the canvas while he walked over to Wiman?  Funniest quote from one of our fans goes to Thomas Sweeney Anthony who said: "Lmao did you guys see the ref?, oh your knocked out so im just going to leave you and walk away. :/"

UFC Fight Night For The Troops 2: Former NFL Player Matt Mitrione or Tim Hague?

UFC Fight Night For The Troops 2: Former NFL Player Matt Mitrione or Tim Hague? How does my breath smell?

UFC's Yves Edwards Is Not Scared Of The McKenzie-tine: "This Ain't The French Revolution!"

UFC Fight For The Troops 2:  Will Yves Edwards' "Thugjitsu" avoid the McKenzie-tine & celebrate with Lay's BBQ Chips?

UFN 23's Yves Edwards scared of guillotines? "This ain't the French Revolution"

Apparently, it's not easy to avoid getting caught in a guillotine choke by "The Ultimate Fighter 12" cast member Cody McKenzie.

Just ask castmate Aaron Wilkinson, who fell prey to the choke in the show's finale, or the nine other fighters who have done the same in McKenzie's three-year pro career.

A lot of guys would tear out hair fretting over the possibility. Yves Edwards (38-16-1 MMA, 6-4 UFC) is not one of them.

It's hard to scare him about a move he's been doing since McKenzie (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) was watching Sesame Street.

"I'm not going to die in a guillotine," Edwards recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). "This ain't the French Revolution."

Edwards is next to contend with McKenzie's long arms and good grip when they meet Saturday at "UFC Fight Night 23: Fight for the Troops 2," which airs live on Spike TV from Fort Hood in Texas.

Edwards said he has a pretty simple plan for dealing with McKenzie's primary weapon.

"You just avoid those types of positions," he said. "That doesn't mean you don't pass his guard, or you don't get in his half-guard and try to elbow his face in."

Besides, Edwards only has so many taps in him per month by his own rules, and he's not going to give up an extra one.

"It's good that this fight is at the end of the month," he said.

Another shot at the top

It's also another chance at a second life inside the octagon.

With 56 fights under his belt, Edwards has seen enough ups and downs for several careers. There were many times when he felt he would never get a chance to become the best in the world. That ship had sailed when he was submitted by Mark Hominick at UFC 58 and stopped by Joe Stevenson at UFC 61.

Once considered the rightful heir to nonexistent 155-pound title, he was forced to confront the reality of being a regional attraction.

But after a conversation with UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta at the previous installment of "UFC Fight for the Troops" – his American Top Team teammate Luigi Fioravanti fought Brodie Farber on the preliminary card – he realized that he had a chance to work his way back into the world's biggest fight organization. So he pulled himself up by the bootstraps and went back to work.

He went 4-1 in his next five outings, and when a handful of injuries shuffled the UFC Fight Night 22 fight card, he was on the short list for a short-notice fight. He made the most of it and outpointed John Gunderson, a fighter also expected to threaten him on the ground.

Looking back, Edwards doesn't appreciate the career seesaws any more than he did when he was in the middle of them. But he's glad things worked out, and he's ready to put in another run for the top.

No guillotine is going to scare him on the way.

"When you're doing this, you want to be the best guy in the world, and for me, the best guy in the world is the lightweight champion of the UFC," he said. "So, that's the guy I want to beat."
