DALLAS (July 29, 2011) HDNet’s “Inside MMA” breaks more shocking news concerning StrikeForce™ Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem who “Inside MMA” has learned has received a cut letter and has been released from the promotion.
Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum |
Sources...have told “Inside MMA’s” Ron Kruck that Strikeforce™ has exercised its right to eliminate the one remaining fight on Overeem’s contract effective July 22nd.
Also according to the source, Overeem has been dealing with more serious injuries than originally reported, including a broken toe and rib and elbow problems.
Overeem will fight next in October in Russia for the promotion United Glory. No word on who his opponent will be.

Also according to the source, Overeem has been dealing with more serious injuries than originally reported, including a broken toe and rib. He also has problems with an elbow.
Overeem has fought through nagging injuries and while set to fight in the StrikeForce™ semi-finals (scheduled for September 10th in Cincinnati) Overeem has stated he still needed more time to recover.
Another issue that StrikeForce™ officials had regarding Overeem’s participation in the tournament is he had only one fight left on his current contract and he would have had to fight twice to win the Grand Prix.

ACSM Issues New Guidelines on Exercise Quality, Quantity
The American College of Sports Medicine released new recommendations regarding the quantity and quality of exercise for adults. So now when health club and fitness center staff members are asked by patrons, "How much exercise do I need?" they can respond definitively, the organization says. In a position statement titled "Quantity and Quality of Exercise for Developing and Maintaining Cardiorespiratory, Musculoskeletal, and Neuromotor Fitness in Apparently Healthy Adults: Guidance for Prescribing Exercise," the ACSM provides current scientific evidence on physical activity and includes recommendations on aerobic exercise, strength training and flexibility. Consistent with the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, ACSM’s overall recommendation is for most adults to engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week. “The scientific evidence we reviewed is indisputable,” says Carol Ewing Garber, chair of the writing committee and an associate professor of movement sciences at the Teachers College of Columbia University. “When it comes to exercise, the benefits far outweigh the risks. A program of regular exercise — beyond activities of daily living — is essential for most adults.” The position statement’s purpose is to offer health and fitness professionals scientific, evidence-based recommendations that help them customize exercise prescriptions for healthy adults, and it ispublished in the July 2011 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise®, the official journal of ACSM. Here are the basic recommendations, by exercise category: Cardiorespiratory Exercise: Adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. Exercise recommendations can be met through 30 to 60 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise five days per week or 20 to 60 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise three days per week. One continuous session and multiple shorter sessions of at least 10 minutes are both acceptable to accumulate the desired amount of daily exercise. Resistance Exercise: Adults should train each major muscle group two or three days each week using a variety of exercises and equipment. Very light or light intensity is best for older individuals or previously sedentary adults just starting to exercise. Two to four sets of each exercise, with anywhere between eight and 20 repetitions, will help adults improve strength and power. Flexibility Exercise: Adults should do flexibility exercises at least two or three days each week to improve range of motion. Each stretch should be held for 10 to 30 seconds, to the point of tightness or slight discomfort. Repeat each stretch two to four times, accumulating 60 seconds per stretch. Neurometer Exercise: Neuromotor exercise, also referred to as “functional fitness training,” is recommended two or three days per week. Exercises should involve motor skills (balance, agility, coordination and gait), proprioceptive exercise training, and multifaceted activities (yoga) to improve physical function and prevent falls in older adults. Between 20 and 30 minutes per day is appropriate for neuromotor exercise. In addition to outlining basic recommendations and their scientific reasoning, the position statement also clarifies three new points: 1. Pedometers are not an accurate measure of exercise quality and should not be used as the sole measure of physical activity. 2. Though exercise protects against heart disease, it is still possible for active adults to develop heart problems. All adults must be able to recognize the warning signs of heart disease, and all health care providers should ask patients about these symptoms. 3. Sedentary behavior is distinct from physical activity and has been shown to be a health risk in itself. Meeting the guidelines for physical activity does not make up for a sedentary lifestyle. “It is no longer enough to consider whether an individual engages in adequate amounts of weekly exercise,” Garber says. “We also need to determine how much time a person spends in sedentary pursuits, like watching television or working on a computer. Health and fitness professionals must be c |
Overeem Replaced By Cormier In Strikeforce Grand Prix To Fight "Bigfoot" Silva. Silva Wants To Fight Barnett & Kharitonov At The Same Time!
It Sucks That Overeem Was Cut From The Strikeforce Grand Prix. At Least Daniel Cormier Will Fight "Bigfoot" Silva Who Wants To Fight Josh Barnett and Sergei Kharitonov At The Same Time!
We met Cormier in Anaheim for the UFC and credit his correct prediction of Cain Velasquez's easy win over Brock Lesnar.
Story by John Morgan from MMA Junkie.
Alistair Overeem (35-11 MMA, 3-0 SF) today informed the world he would not be fighting for Strikeforce on Sept. 10.
Strikeforce today informed Overeem his services will not be needed for the remainder of Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix.
In a shocking development, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has confirmed that Overeem has been pulled from the tournament, and Daniel Cormier (8-0 MMA, 5-0 SF) will take his spot in the semifinals of the promotion's heavyweight grand prix.
The change was first reported by Tatame.com. It's currently unclear if Overeem is still under contract with the promotion or if Strikeforce brass elected to hand their heavyweight champion an outright release.
Overeem today revealed on MMA Fighting's "The MMA Hour" that the promotion requested he return to action against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (16-2 MMA, 3-1 SF) on Sept. 10. However, the Dutch striker said he asked for more time and preferred an October booking.
With the company planning for a September event to host the promotion's heavyweight grand prix semifinal bouts, some obvious tension was built. Overeem said the company threatened his release even before today's official announcement.
"What's going to happen next, I don't know," Overeem told MMA Fighting. "I've had some threats of cutting me out of the tournament if I don't participate. I don't know if they're going to do it."
Overeem now has his answer.
Overeem's publicly stated position was that the Sept. 10 date was too soon to return to action and that he needed time to heal some nagging injuries.
However, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned that Overeem was in the process of working out a new contract with the promotion, which may have contributed to his unwillingness to compete in September. It may also explain his recently expressed desire to challenge champion boxers Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko in a boxing contest – a strategy similar to the one Nick Diaz used to leverage his Strikeforce title into a shot at the UFC's welterweight belt.
Silva, who was aware of today's reports but unaware of any official change, seemed rather unconcerned at the development.
"I don't care who they put against me," Silva today told MMAjunkie.com through his manager and interpreter, Alex Davis. "If Overeem doesn't want to fight because his toe is hurt, then get me King Kong. Get Josh Barnett and Sergei Kharitonov both. I'll fight them both at the same time.
"I'm very frustrated and disappointed that someone who is considered one of the best fighters in the world would basically withdraw from the competition and refuse to fight me. Overeem is a great guy, but I don't really like what he's doing right now as a fighter. Either way, I don't pick my opponents. I would have much rather Cain Velasquez stepped in for Overeem because I want to prove I'm the best heavyweight in the world. If it's Cormier I won't take him lightly, either. I'll continue to train just as hard as if I was still facing Overeem."
Davis believes Cormier provides a capable fill-in, but he also admits the entire situation is unfortunate.
"Antonio and I both find it very unfortunate that Overeem apparently declined to take into consideration all the interests involved in his appearance," Davis said. "Strikeforce needs him to fight in September. His fans, and really almost all MMA fans, were looking forward to the conclusion of this amazing grand prix. Antonio was looking forward to fighting an opponent as popular and accomplished as Overeem is. Now, all that may be lost."

Every Friday night at 10 pm ET/P on FUEL TV, Shark Fights pro mixed martial arts competitions feature some of the best names and match-ups in the game. With heavy hitters such as Houston Alexander, Keith "The Dean of Mean" Jardine, Sokoudjou, Paul Daley, Trevor Prangley, and Danillo Villefort having graced the cage, you know, whatever the card, that your going to witness a war.
We would like to talk to you about an amazing opportunity that is
available with FOX Fuel (www.Fuel.TV) and Shark Fight Promotions, LLC
(www.sharkfights.com). This opportunity would give Netflix excellent
exposure with one of the fastest growing professional sports. Shark
Fights and FOX Fuel have recently signed a deal to air a new Shark
Fights show as part of FOX Fuel's “Friday Fight Night” programming. FOX
Fuel specializes in extreme sports like Motocross, Surfing and
Skateboarding. They are looking to get behind Mixed Martial Arts in a
big way and are really pushing Shark Fight.
Just recently, FOX put George Greenberg in charge of FOX Fuel because
FOX really wants to bring FOX Fuel to the next level. George Greenberg
has been nominated for over 16 Emmys, and created FOX sports media with
the NFL, and is a guru when it comes to sports. George believes in MMA
and actually put MMA on FOX back in the 90’s so he knows the sport, and
believes that MMA is going to take FOX Fuel to the next level. That is
why George has created "Friday Fight Night" on FOX Fuel to help build
the content and audience.
The reason I am telling you this is because this will have a MAJOR
impact on you as a sponsor, and being on the ground floor with Shark
fights, and FOX Fuel. George is a genius and understands the business of
MMA so this is very good news for Shark fights, sponsors, and FOX fuel.
This just happened about 2 weeks ago and we all were very excited. Here
is the press release:
*On FOX Fuel they will air the episodes 3 and 4 weeks later in a 2 part
series so that gives us time to edit, integrate the sponsors, make sure
we edit out all the boring fights, and have to take a 3 hour show and
condense into 2 hours. George Greenberg wants to do it this way so all
the fights are exciting and he can build the audience.
*Shark fights 13 has re aired already 10 times over one month on FOX
Fuel to give you a idea of re airs. On the HDnet broadcasts they usually
re air about twice a month.
*EACH FOX fuel episode is one hour. So part 1 is a hour and part 2 is
also one hour. HDnet is a 3 hour show.
