Jiu-Jitsu fighter Jason Lee kidnapped and robbed in Rio on the eve of the Summer Olympics

Jiu-Jitsu fighter Jason Lee says he was kidnapped and robbed by perpetrators in police uniforms in Rio de Janeiro on the eve of the 2016 Olympic games:

Jason Lee‏Twitter.com@jasonleejitsu
What did you guys get up to yesterday? I got kidnapped. Go Olympics! #Rio2016

Lee is not a member of the New Zealand Olympic team as jiu-jitsu is not currently an Olympic sport. However, the incident is a telling one for the safety of the thousands of tourists who will be visiting Rio over the next few weeks.
According to a news source in New Zealand, Lee was forced to withdrawal NZ$850 (US$600).
Lee recounted the incident as:
Lee was pulled over by two police on motorbikes, each armed with a pistol.
The Police said they were carrying out a routine search for drugs and weapons.
"First he asked me stretch my arms, then patted me down. He grabbed my genital area, which was quite a surprise."
"At this point it still looked reasonably professional."
After a full search of his car and person, one of officers took his license and the registration of his rented car away to his bike for a few minutes.
When he returned he was brandishing a large book, and told Lee he was breaking the law.
"He sa[id] 'you can't drive in Brazil as a foreigner without a passport,' which I now know isn't the case at all. The rental car company hadn't mentioned that to me."
"He starts opening the book, showing me all these passages in Portuguese, which I can sort of read like every third word.
The police demanded that Lee either paid them 2000 Brazilian Reais (NZ$850) or they would arrest him and take him to the federal police.
According to Lee, when he told the men he did not have that much cash, they transferred him to an unmarked car and took him to several ATMs to withdrawal the money. He added that they later warned him not to report the incident.

Brain Health Self-Assessment: Poor Balance on 1 Leg Lends Support for Increased Risk

A Simple Assessment Tool to Measure Brain Health and Coordination Over Time for Aging Fighters and all of us.

Struggling to balance on one leg for 20 seconds or longer was linked to an increased risk for small blood vessel damage in the brain and reduced cognitive function in otherwise healthy people with no clinical symptoms, according to new research in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke.

"Our study found that the ability to balance on one leg is an important test for brain health," said Yasuharu Tabara, Ph.D., lead study author and associate professor at the Center for Genomic Medicine at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine in Kyoto, Japan. "Individuals showing poor balance on one leg should receive increased attention, as this may indicate an increased risk for brain disease and cognitive decline."

Study consisted of 841 women and 546 men, average age of 67. To measure one-leg standing time, participants stood with their eyes open and raised one leg. The maximum time for keeping the leg raised was 60 seconds. Participants performed this examination twice and the better of the two times was used in the study analysis. Cerebral small vessel disease was evaluated using brain magnetic resonance imaging.

Researchers found that the inability to balance on one leg for longer than 20 seconds was associated with cerebral small vessel disease, namely small infarctions without symptoms such as lacunar infarction and microbleeds. They noted that:
  • 34.5 percent of those with more than two lacunar infarction lesions had trouble balancing.
  • 16 percent of those with one lacunar infarction lesion had trouble balancing.
  • 30 percent of those with more than two microbleed lesions had trouble balancing.
  • 15.3 percent one microbleed lesion had trouble balancing.

Overall, those with cerebral diseases were older, had high blood pressure and had thicker carotid arteries than those who did not have cerebral small vessel disease. However, after adjustment for these covariates, people with more microbleeds and lacunar infarctions in the brain had shorter one-legged standing times. Short one-legged standing times were also independently linked with lower cognitive scores.

Although previous studies have examined the connection between gait and physical abilities and the risk of stroke, this is among the first study to closely examine how long a person can stand on one leg as an indication of their overall
brain health.

"One-leg standing time is a simple measure of postural instability and might be a consequence of the presence of brain abnormalities," said Tabara.

Small vessel disease occurs due to microangiopathy of arterioles in the brain, making these arteries less flexible, which can interfere with blood flow. Small vessel disease typically increases with age. Loss of motor coordination, including balance, as well as cognitive impairment has been suggested to represent subclinical brain damage. Tabara and colleagues also found a strong link between struggling to stand on one leg and increased age, with marked shorter one-leg standing time in patients age 60 and over.

Although the study did not assess participants' histories of falling or physical fitness issues, such as how fast they could walk or any gait abnormalities, Tabara said the one-leg standing test is an easy way to determine if there are early signs of being at risk for a stroke and cognitive impairment and whether these patients need additional evaluation.

However, we would argue that this test should be used over time to ensure reliability of this test. A lack of neuromuscular coordination could be the main limiting factor in the early stages of assessment when balancing on one leg has not been practiced by the person being assessed.

UFC 139 Shogun vs. Hendo conference call
by Ross Cascio November 16, 2011

STUDIO MMA, LOS ANGELES - With UFC 139 Shogun vs Hendo coming up this Saturday November 19th, four of the main card fighters gathered for a conference call. The light heavyweight bout between MMA legends Dan "Hendo" Henderson and Maurico "Shogun" Rua is the type of dream fight Read more...

The light heavyweight bout between MMA legends Dan "Hendo" Henderson and Maurico "Shogun" Rua is the type of dream fight that fans have been hoping to see inside the octagon since the UFC took the Pride Fighting Organization into its fold in 2007. Former Pride champion and current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Henderson acknowledged, "I'm excited about fighting Shogun. It's a fight that I've wanted for a long time".

Rua, a former Pride middleweight Grand Prix and former UFC light heavyweight champion, shared the same sentiments saying, "This is a marquee fight for me. Dan Henderson is a legend in the sport". Rua went on to explain that the fight between his younger brother Murilio "Ninja" Rua and Henderson in Pride back in 2001, which the younger Rua won, has helped Shogun game-plan for the upcoming bout. Shogun said, "I've watched the fight between my brother and Dan Henderson many times. My brother helped me with strategy for Dan Henderson".

The fight will mark Henderson's first fight back with the UFC since a contract dispute saw him leave the promotion and head to Strikeforce in 2009. Henderson said that, "the timing was right to return to the UFC" adding, "I have no regrets about going to Strikeforce but the UFC belt is one of my goals". The Rua vs. Henderson matchup has the potential to be explosive and is being viewed as a number one contender's match that will have title implications in the light heavyweight, and perhaps even middleweight, division. Despite this speculation about upcoming fights, both fighters seem dialed in for Saturday night. Rua said, "My whole focus is on Dan Henderson. It's going to be a great fight". Henderson added, "I'm going to do what I need to do in the cage and worry about everything else after". Regarding a potential rematch with long-reigning middleweight champ Anderson Silva however Henderson hinted, "I'm never enthused about cutting weight but if I was to cut weight now there's only one matchup I would do it for."

Storied fighters Wanderlei Silva and Cung Le were also on hand to talk about their upcoming middleweight bout at UFC 139. The fight is an intriguing and exciting matchup with storylines that are almost the polar opposite of Rua vs. Henderson. While Rua and Henderson are jockeying for position in UFC title pictures, Silva and Le are, in a sense, fighting to prove that they belong in the UFC. Cung Le is a former IKF light heavyweight San Shou world champion and he's making his UFC debut against Silva. Le crossed over into MMA and into Strikeforce in 2006, prior to the UFC's takeover of the promotion and has yet to fight on MMA's biggest stage. Le went 7-1 in Strikeforce over the course of four years but said he feels a sense of validation now that he is fighting in the UFC. Le said, "UFC is the top of the food chain" and, "it feels like going from the Canadian Football League to the NFL". Le supporters are hoping that he can prove his mettle against former Pride middleweight champ Silva, one of the most famed and ferocious Brazilian fighters in MMA history, who has faced questions about retiring after dropping three of his last four fights, two of which came by knockout in the first round. Wanderlei shrugged off the retirement issue saying, "I'm healthy. I'm in great condition and I'm ready to prove that on Saturday night". Silva went on to add, "My performance will make it clear I can fight again". Le, who is fighting in his hometown of San Jose, has also faced some questions about distractions coming from his ongoing movie career but he too compartmentalized those distractions saying, "I'm a fighter first before I'm an actor". It's clear both fighters will be out to make a statement on Saturday night.

With so many big name fighters and storylines spanning from the past to the future of MMA, UFC 139 - Shogun vs. Hendo is sure to be an exciting event for MMA fans.

Alistair Overeem Released From Strikeforce! Combat Sports Contract Break Down

DALLAS (July 29, 2011)   HDNet’s “Inside MMA” breaks more shocking news concerning StrikeForce™  Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem who “Inside MMA” has learned has received a cut letter and has been released from the promotion.

Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum

Sources...have told “Inside MMA’s” Ron Kruck that Strikeforce™ has exercised its right to eliminate the one remaining fight on Overeem’s contract effective July 22nd.

Also according to the source, Overeem has been dealing with more serious injuries than originally reported, including a broken toe and rib and elbow problems.
Overeem will fight next in October in Russia for the promotion United Glory.  No word on who his opponent will be.

Also according to the source, Overeem has been dealing with more serious injuries than originally reported, including a broken toe and rib. He also has problems with an elbow.
Overeem has fought through nagging injuries and while set to fight in the StrikeForce™ semi-finals (scheduled for September 10th in Cincinnati) Overeem has stated he still needed more time to recover.

Another issue that StrikeForce™ officials had regarding Overeem’s participation in the tournament is he had only one fight left on his current contract and he would have had to fight twice to win the Grand Prix.

Renzo is tough.  We heard him say he wanted his arm broken by Kazushi Sakuraba rather than give up to remind him of his mistake.

How do you cross-train? Do you think Anderson Silva will use his Aikido training with Steven Seagal in his next UFC fight against Chael Sonnen?

MMA fighters cross-training for the UFC: Do you think Anderson Silva will use his Aikido training with Steven Seagal in his next UFC fight against Chael Sonnen? I took Aikido a long time ago so I am interested in its application at the pro level with their speed and power.
