Mixed Martial Arts Strength & Conditioning Coaches: Biomechanics and Anatomy Questions for review

Biomechanics Questions for Mixed Martial Arts Coaches and Strength and Conditioning Coaches like NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS).

Question 6
1 pts
The anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments limit which type of knee motion?

Question 8
Which of the following statements is/are true?

  Hint:
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which restricts the forward sliding of the femur on the tibial
plateaus during knee flexion, is often injured when an athlete who is running decelerates rapidly or changes directions quickly. It is important to remember that since acceleration is a vector quantity,
changing directions, even while maintaining a constant speed, represents a change in acceleration. The concept of angular acceleration, with direction constantly changing, is discussed in Chapter 11. The forces associated with change in acceleration based on change in direction must be compensated for by MMA and combat sports fighters.

Question 8
1 pts
Which of the following statements is/are true?

Question 91 pts
Most human movement falls into which category?

Question 101 pts
Abduction occurs in frontal plane

Question 11

The three hamstring muscles are:

Question 38
Which statement(s) is/are true?

Question 42

The articular fibrocartilage partial disc in the knee is called ___________.

Question 44
Where is the series elastic component (SEC) of a muscle found?
all of the choices are correct

Question 45

Which of the following is a behavioral property of muscle tissue?

Question 48
To minimize postural adaptations, a back pack load should be as high as possible near the shoulders.

Question 52
In human skeletal muscle, force generation capability is highest in which of the following conditions?

Question 53
The __________________ fiber arrangement is a pattern of fibers within a muscle with short

fibers attaching to one or more tendons.

Question 55

Muscles on the anterior side of the arm produce flexion at which of the following?

Question 61
Which of the following is not true about the menisci in the knee joint?

Question 63
Which knee ligament is most likely to be damaged from a lateral blow?

ANSWER:
Blows to the lateral side of the knee are much more common than
blows to the medial side, because the opposite leg commonly protects
the medial side of the joint. When the foot is planted and a lateral
blow of suffi cient force is sustained, the result is sprain or rupture of
the medial collateral ligament (MCL). Modeling studies suggest that
the muscles crossing the knee are able to resist approximately 17% of
external medial and lateral loads on the knee, with the remaining 83%
sustained by the ligaments and other soft tissues. However, direct
measurements of strain to the knee ligaments indicate that external
tibial torque is more dangerous than medially directed tibial force
for the MCL. In contact sports such as football, the MCL is more
frequently injured, while both medial and lateral collateral ligament
sprains occur among wrestlers, Jiu-Jitsu fighters, mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters, and other combat sports. See combat sports statistics for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Bellator Fighting Championship, Vale Tudo in Brasil (Brazil), and Pride Fighting Championship in Japan.

Question 63 1 pts

Which of the following causes hip adduction?

ANSWER:

Adduction
The hip adductors are those muscles that cross the joint medially and
include the adductor longus, adductor brevis, adductor magnus, and gracilis (Figure 8-7). The hip adductors are regularly active during the swing
phase of the gait cycle to bring the foot beneath the body’s center of gravity for placement during the support phase. The gracilis is a long, relatively weak strap muscle that also contributes to flexion of the leg at the knee. The other three adductor muscles also contribute to flexion and lateral rotation at the hip, particularly when the femur is medially rotated.

Question 72
Internal rotation is synonymous with which of the following?

Rotation of an
arm or leg as a unit in the transverse plane is called medial rotation,or
internal rotation, when rotation is toward the midline of the body, and
lateral rotation,or external rotation, when the rotation is away from the
midline of the body

UFC 200 Light Heavyweight Daniel Cormier vs Anderson Spider Silva & Heavyweights Cain Velasquez vs Travis Browne

UFC 200 Daniel Cormier vs. Anderson Spider Silva Results

LAUZON vs SANCHEZ

What many believed was going to be the sleeper Fight of the Night on the UFC 200 card Saturday at T-Mobile Arena instead turned out to be a devastating knockout win for Joe Lauzon, who finished fellow lightweight action hero Diego Sanchez in less than a round.
Lauzon’s striking was sharp, crushing Sanchez twice with left hands in the early going. The gutsy Sanchez tried to recover, but Lauzon picked his shots and continued to hurt him as he pursued the Albuquerque native around the Octagon. Finally, another barrage of punches was enough for referee Mark Smith, who stopped the contest at the 1:26 mark.

Lauzon moves to 26-12; Sanchez, who was stopped for the first time in his career by strikes (a TKO loss to BJ Penn was due to a cut) falls to 28-9.
MOUSASI vs. SANTOS
Middleweight contender Gegard Mousasi impressed in winning his second straight bout, halting Thiago Santos in the first round.

Mousasi was a master of controlling the distance in the first half of the opening round, as he fired in strikes and was out of range before Santos had a chance to counter. Then, midway through, he flurried and hurt Santos, using the Brazilian’s retreat to take the fight to the mat. While there, Santos appeared to clear his head, but as he rose to his feet, Mousasi clipped him with a punch and sent him crashing back to the canvas. This time, Santos would not escape, with a follow-up shot bringing in referee Marc Goddard to stop the bout at 4:32 of round one.

With the win, the Netherlands’ Mousasi improves to 39-6-2; Rio de Janeiro’s Santos falls to 13-4.
JIM MILLER vs. GOMI
In a crossroads bout between two lightweight veterans, Jim Miller opened up the UFC 200 card with an impressive first-round stoppage of Takanori Gomi, snapping a two-fight losing streak.

Miller’s opportunity to get the fight to the mat took less than a minute, and the New Jersey native went to work for a submission immediately as he took Gomi’s back. The former PRIDE champion fought to get loose, but Miller remained patient, and when Gomi’s neck didn’t open up for the choke, he went to his striking, delivering a series of unanswered blows that forced referee Mark Smith to intervene at the 2:18 mark.

Miller moves to 26-8 with 1 NC with the win; Tokyo’s Gomi, who has now lost three straight, falls to 35-12 with 1 NC.

Brain Health Self-Assessment: Poor Balance on 1 Leg Lends Support for Increased Risk

A Simple Assessment Tool to Measure Brain Health and Coordination Over Time for Aging Fighters and all of us.

Struggling to balance on one leg for 20 seconds or longer was linked to an increased risk for small blood vessel damage in the brain and reduced cognitive function in otherwise healthy people with no clinical symptoms, according to new research in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke.

"Our study found that the ability to balance on one leg is an important test for brain health," said Yasuharu Tabara, Ph.D., lead study author and associate professor at the Center for Genomic Medicine at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine in Kyoto, Japan. "Individuals showing poor balance on one leg should receive increased attention, as this may indicate an increased risk for brain disease and cognitive decline."

Study consisted of 841 women and 546 men, average age of 67. To measure one-leg standing time, participants stood with their eyes open and raised one leg. The maximum time for keeping the leg raised was 60 seconds. Participants performed this examination twice and the better of the two times was used in the study analysis. Cerebral small vessel disease was evaluated using brain magnetic resonance imaging.

Researchers found that the inability to balance on one leg for longer than 20 seconds was associated with cerebral small vessel disease, namely small infarctions without symptoms such as lacunar infarction and microbleeds. They noted that:
  • 34.5 percent of those with more than two lacunar infarction lesions had trouble balancing.
  • 16 percent of those with one lacunar infarction lesion had trouble balancing.
  • 30 percent of those with more than two microbleed lesions had trouble balancing.
  • 15.3 percent one microbleed lesion had trouble balancing.

Overall, those with cerebral diseases were older, had high blood pressure and had thicker carotid arteries than those who did not have cerebral small vessel disease. However, after adjustment for these covariates, people with more microbleeds and lacunar infarctions in the brain had shorter one-legged standing times. Short one-legged standing times were also independently linked with lower cognitive scores.

Although previous studies have examined the connection between gait and physical abilities and the risk of stroke, this is among the first study to closely examine how long a person can stand on one leg as an indication of their overall
brain health.

"One-leg standing time is a simple measure of postural instability and might be a consequence of the presence of brain abnormalities," said Tabara.

Small vessel disease occurs due to microangiopathy of arterioles in the brain, making these arteries less flexible, which can interfere with blood flow. Small vessel disease typically increases with age. Loss of motor coordination, including balance, as well as cognitive impairment has been suggested to represent subclinical brain damage. Tabara and colleagues also found a strong link between struggling to stand on one leg and increased age, with marked shorter one-leg standing time in patients age 60 and over.

Although the study did not assess participants' histories of falling or physical fitness issues, such as how fast they could walk or any gait abnormalities, Tabara said the one-leg standing test is an easy way to determine if there are early signs of being at risk for a stroke and cognitive impairment and whether these patients need additional evaluation.

However, we would argue that this test should be used over time to ensure reliability of this test. A lack of neuromuscular coordination could be the main limiting factor in the early stages of assessment when balancing on one leg has not been practiced by the person being assessed.
