UFC Light Heavyweight Champ "Shogun" Rua vs. Rashad Evans! UFC 129 On March 19, 2011
Justin Bailey on BJPenn.com reported this story when Shogun's own website for the U.S. did not have this information:
"UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua is scheduled to make his first title defense against "Suga" Rashad Evans at UFC 129 in Newark, New Jersey on March 19.
Sources in Evans' camp informed The Fight Network of the scheduled title fight.
The title fight between Rua and Evans was originally scheduled to take place in the UFC's return to Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., but a return to Abu Dhabi stands questionable for unknown reasons.
"Shogun" won the UFC Light Heavyweight Title from Lyoto Machida at UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on May 8 of this year. In the title fight, Shogun knocked out Machida in the first round to give "The Dragon" his first career loss.
At UFC 114: Rampage vs. Evans, Evans won a unanimous decision win over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Before that, "Suga" also won a unanimous decision over Thiago Silva at UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva. Evans is a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, winning the title from Forrest Griffin and losing it to Lyoto Machida.
The event will be the UFC's third trip to Newark with UFC 111: St-Pierre vs. Hardy and UFC 78: Validation being the two previous events held there. With New York still holding out on regulating Mixed Martial Arts, the location of Newark is reasonably as close as the UFC can come to holding an event in the New York area"
