Vitor Belfort replaces Machida to fight Jon Jones at UFC 152 in Toronto

UFC 152 in Toronto Update

Up-to-the-minute news about UFC 152, taking place September 22 in Toronto

Jon Jones will now face former champion Vitor Belfort for the UFC light heavyweight championship on September 22 in Toronto, as today's bizarre series of events has taken yet another twist.

Jones was originally slated to face Dan Henderson at UFC 151 in Las Vegas; however, Henderson was forced to withdraw this week due to a knee injury. Polarizing former middleweight Chael Sonnen was offered the replacement spot and it briefly appeared that UFC 151 would take place with Jones vs. Sonnen as the headliner. However, Jones ultimately declined the fight, forcing the unprecedented cancellation of an entire UFC event.

This morning, UFC president Dana White announced that Jones would face former champion Lyoto Machida in a rematch that would headline the UFC 152 event on September 22. Machida earned the contender spot with his showcase knockout of Ryan Bader earlier this month. But this time it was Machida who declined the opportunity, opening the door for fellow Brazilian Belfort to earn the nod.

Belfort had been penciled in to fight Alan Belcher at middlewight at UFC 153 in Rio; a replacement for that fight will be announced in coming days.

MacDonald Forced out of UFC 152 Bout with Penn due to Cut updated August 4
The bout between BJ Penn and Rory MacDonald, scheduled for UFC 152 in Toronto, will have to wait for the moment, as UFC President Dana White revealed Saturday night that a cut suffered by MacDonald in sparring will force the Canadian out of the highly-anticipated matchup.

In a post on his Twitter feed, MacDonald revealed a picture of the cut over his right eye, which took 38 stitches to close. He expects to be back in late November.

Hamill Returns September 22, More Fights Added updated August 3
Matt "The Hammer" Hamill has verbally agreed to make his UFC return against Canadian newcomer Roger "The Hulk" Hollett in a light heavyweight bout at UFC 152.

Three more matchups have been verbally agreed to for the event, which is headlined by the UFC's first-ever flyweight championship bout.

Two veterans coming off of wins, Dan Miller and and Sean "The Punisher" Pierson, will meet in a welterweight bout in Pierson's hometown.

Two of the most dynamic featherweight contenders in the world go head-to-head as Cub Swanson and Charles Oliveira meet in the Octagon. Both fighters are coming off scintillating performances as Swanson has knocked out his last two foes and Oliviera has submitted his last two.

On the heels of his UFC 149 Fight of the Night performance, Ontario's own Mitch Gagnon will take on Walel Watson in a bantamweight battle between exciting prospects.

More Bouts Announced for UFC 152 updated July 24
Fans in Toronto will get a treat in the 145-pound division as Jimy Hettes and Marcus Brimage will duke it out. The undefeated Hettes has quickly emerged as a featherweight prospect with his relentless offensive assault, but he will have his hands full dealing with the power of Brimage.

Plus, two exciting welterweights on win streaks will go head-to-head at UFC 152 as verbal agreements are in for Simeon "The Grin" Thoresen vs. Seth "The Polish Pistola" Baczynski.

Vinny Magalhaes Returns to the Octagon updated July 18
Riding a five-fight win streak, submission wizard Vinny Magalhaes has verbally agreed to make his UFC return at UFC 152 September 22nd against dangerous striker Igor "The Duke" Pokrajac in a light heavyweight bout.

Toronto Title Fight, Co-Main Confirmed for September updated July 13
The first-ever UFC flyweight world title fight goes down on September 22nd at UFC 152 in Toronto. The four man tournament, which began in March, will culminate with Joseph Benavidez taking on Demetrious Johnson in what is sure to be a memorable bout between two gifted fighters on a historic night.

Additionally, the co-main event has been verbally agreed to as top-ten middleweights "All-American" Brian Stann and brash Brit Michael "The Count" Bisping battle it out on Canadian soil to move closer to a title shot.

The Prodigy Returns Against Rory MacDonald updated June 9
After hinting at retirement following his October 2011 loss to Nick Diaz, former two division UFC champion BJ Penn has found the motivation to continue his storied career in the form of Canadian phenom Rory MacDonald, who he has verbally agreed to face in a September 22nd bout in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. MacDonald, winner of three in a row, has also agreed to this intriguing matchup on the UFC 152 card.

Lab Grown Burgers, Should You Eat This Mystery Meat?

New ‘mystery meat:’ Should you eat a lab-grown burger?
Written By Loren Grush
Published February 20, 2012

FoxNews.com’s Joshua Rhett Miller contributed to this article.

It’s giving a whole new meaning to the term “mystery meat.”
The first ever “test tube” meat could be hitting menus in the not-so-distant future. Dutch scientist Mark Post announced at a symposium on Sunday titled “The Next Agricultural Revolution” that he has come up with a method to grow meat entirely out of cow stem cells. Post said his team aims to have a couple of thousands of small tissues to assemble into an entire hamburger as early as this fall.

The ultimate goal: Entirely replace the meat-animal industry.
The project was made possible by a donation of 250,000 euros, or close to $330,000, from an anonymous investor with a “care for the environment…and interest in life-changing technologies.”

Post, professor and head of the physiology department at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, spoke with FoxNews.com before the major announcement. He said that his team is very focused on making the process efficient and cost effective. However, Post said the method is still in the “laboratory phase.”

"We are just focusing on a proof of concept," Post told FoxNews.com in January . "That yes, it can be done in a laboratory, just to show the world that it can be done."

While lab-grown meat may seem incredible, it ultimately begs the question - would you eat it? Or maybe a better question would be, should you eat it?

“Right now the verdict is out,” said Dr. Fred Vagnini, medical director for Heart, Diabetes & Weight Loss Centers of New York. “But it’s a novel idea that could play into a very positive thing. This is genetically engineered food, so it could be made to be more bio-active, could be made to be less fatty. There’s a lot of control over the muscle.”

Vagnini said that this could potentially lessen the negative aspects associated with eating red meat. Many studies have shown red meat to be linked with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, higher cholesterol, and certain types of cancer.
“The point is this could be a healthier meat,” Vagnini said. “All of the studies show that red meat is not good for you. But it does have a few benefits for many people. It has a lot of vitamin B12 and carnitine, an amino acid which is important for heart energy and cellular metabolism.”

The fat in red meat is what is typically linked to higher risks for most cardiovascular issues. But fat is what gives red meat its delicious flavor. So Vagnini said the real mystery would be how this meat would taste.
“Test tube” meat could provide potential health benefits, but with any new dietary procedure, they always run the risk of negative outcomes.

“A downside could be that because it’s genetically engineered, there could be changes in the protein DNA that could make it carcinogenic,” Vagnini said. “That’s a that main negative component when it comes to GMOs, or genetically modified organisms.”

But GMOs may be the world’s last resort when it comes to animal foods. The global demand for meat is expected to rise by 60 percent by 2050, said American scientist Nicholas Genovese, who organized the symposium at which Post spoke. But with most of the pastured lands already in use, livestock producers would have to further expand into nature.’

According to Genovese, this would cause the destruction of biodiversity, an increase in greenhouse gases and an increase in many diseases.
And for those reluctant to turn to vegetable substitutes, Vagnini said that it’s methods like these that will help meet the growing demand for meat while helping to save the planet.

“Sooner or later we can’t continue to feed the world,” Vagnini said. “Eventually we’ll have to go to these alternative foods, and I personally think they can be made more safely.”

UFC/Zuffa, LLC Purchase of Strikeforce Passes the Scrutiny of the Federal Trade Commission!

Zuffa, LLC (Zuffa), the majority owners of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) have escaped from a potential U.S. government strange-hold on their mixed martial arts (MMA) acquisition of competitor Strikeforce (Explosion Entertainment, LLC).

We are not surprised for many reasons.  First, what government agency wants to be on record causing jobs to be down-sized when the U.S. economy is still recovering?  Second, MMA is growing rapidly and there are many arguments for consolidation to strengthen the competition and provide more funding for events.  Just like the National Football League, National Basketball League, and National Hockey League.  In contrast, MMA is a much younger sports than baseball in North America.  Baseball was were held by the U.S. Supreme Court is not even be subject to the anti-trust laws of the United States of America.

Third, there are reports that former Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker and many former Strikeforce fighters praised the acquisition.  The more interesting question is whether Zuffa's imposition of much higher fees for sports sponsorship for products that directly compete with Zuffa's products (clothing and energy drinks) violate competition (anti-trust) law?
UFC President Dana White's possible reaction

Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition has closed their nonpublic investigation to determine whether Zuffa, LLC’s acquisition of Explosion Entertainment, LLC may violate Section 7 of the Clayton Act or Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act.  Now the FTC has announced that the investigation is closed, as detailed in a letter to the New York City-based law firm Axinn-Veltrop-Harkrider, LLP, which had been retained by Zuffa as its representation before the FTC.

Re: Acquisition of Explosion Entertainment, LLC (Strikeforce) by Zuffa, LLC (UFC)
FTC File No. 111 0136

Dear Mr. Axinn:
The Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition has been conducting a
nonpublic investigation to determine whether Zuffa, LLC’s acquisition of Explosion
Entertainment, LLC may violate Section 7 of the Clayton Act or Section 5 of the Federal Trade
Commission Act.

Upon further review of this matter, it now appears that no further action is warranted by
the Commission at this time. Accordingly, the investigation has been closed. This action is not
to be construed as a determination that a violation may not have occurred, just as the pendency
of an investigation should not be construed as a determination that a violation has occurred. The
Commission reserves the right to take such further action as the public interest may require.
By direction of the Commission.
